Question types in Blackboard

What is meant by self marking questions?

With questions that are self marking an instructor will set the correct answer when creating the question and the system will automatically mark this and allocate a points value to the student taking the test. As a correct answer needs to be defined for this to work, only certain question types support self marking. These are:

Calculate numeric Multiple answer
Either / Or Multiple choice
Fill in multiple blanks Opinion scale / Likert
Fill in the blank (single) Ordering
Hot spot Quiz bowl

Calculated formula

A calculated formula question allows the instructor to enter variables into the question and a formula.

Blackboard will automatically generate question for each student within range you select.

If a small glass can hold [x] ounces of water, and a large glass can hold [y] ounces of water, what is the total number of ounces in 4 large and 3 small glasses of water?

When a student views the question, the variables [x] and [y] are replaced with values that are generated randomly from number ranges that the instructor specifies.

Calculated Numeric Students answer the question with a numeric answer. An answer range (+/-) is available to have multiple answers.

If the average human body temperature under normal conditions ranges between 36.5 and 37.5 degrees Celsius, what is the average human body temperature in degrees Fahrenheit?

Either/Or This question type allows a number of predefined responses which have two possible answers.
These are:
  • Yes/No
  • Agree/Disagree
  • Right/Wrong
  • True/False

This question type allows the student to enter a answer into the textbox.

Please note:When students submit a response to an essay question, the Add Content menu does not have an Insert Local Files option to to upload a file.

Hotspot question This question type presents an image to the student and the correct answer is obtained by clicking on an area of the image defined by the instructor.

Jumbled Sentence Jumbled Sentence questions require students to complete a sentence by selecting words or phrases from a drop-down list.

Opinion scale and likert

In opinion scales you have a range from 2 to 20. Instructors can define the label for each number.

They are more commonly used in surveys rather than tests. If you add it into a test you must define a correct answer

Short Answer

This short answer is similar to the essay questions in that its open ended but a shorter number of rows are displayed.

Please note:

  • When creating a short answer question there is the option to Set the number of rows that will display in the answer field, with 1-6 rows presented as the available choices. However, whichever number you select, students will be presented with a single text box to input their answer(s).
  • When students submit a response to a short answer question, the Add Content menu does not have an Insert Local Files option to to upload a file.
